Overview of The Love Letter mystery

It is 1807. Lady Mazzing has invited eight young ladies to her mansion for supper as she would like their advice about the next Ball she is planning to hold.

Her one and only son Lord Edward Mazzing will briefly greet the guests, but he will not be joining them for dinner as he has other work commitments. Since his father’s death two years ago, the young Lord has taken over the responsibility of managing their large estate.

Secretly Lady Mazzing views this social event as an opportunity to acquaint herself with the young ladies who may be suitable marriage partners for her son.

Miss Bethany Chesterfield: “Well, I like going outdoors. I’m not like some of the these delicate precious poodles who don’t go out when it’s dry for fear of the dust and don’t go out when it’s wet for fear of puddles. Those people never go out at all and that is very bad for one’s constitution.”

What they’ve said about this mystery party game

Karen McCullough, USA

“I recently ordered the 10 female only version of The Love Letter for my daughter’s 12th birthday party. It turned out better than I had expected.

The girls (ages 11-13) enjoyed it immensely and really got into their roles. They were able to pick up on the idea faster than I thought they would and discussed who they thought the killer was in quite some detail before actually finding out.

We even had one of the participants ask us to do this again next year. I would highly recommend this for other teens and pre-teens (provided that they are fairly good readers).

“Hello, We just had “The Love Letter” murder mystery party for my daughter’s eighteenth birthday. Not one of the girls had attended a murder dinner party before. All of them came in costume and all of them had a blast. As you can see from the photo they all dressed their part…down to the gloves that were suggested. Thanks again for making this party simple to download to all the great suggestions on how to make the party a success. It was!

“Thank you so much for “The Love Letter”. The girls (all 11 and 12 yrs. old) had a blast! The invitations went out 3 weeks ahead of time, and the girls had great fun planning and talking about their costumes. The excitement was evident the night of the party. Many parents stopped in to see all the characters and to take pictures.

Act 1 gave the girls an opportunity to get to know their characters. By Act 2, they were really into it—with lots of sobbing, accusatory tones, etc. Act 3 was quite dramatic.

The girls would love to do something like this again. So, we’ll be shopping around your site to find another mystery. Again, thanks so much for all the help you provided along the way.

“I purchased your mystery kit “The Love Letter” for my daughters 13th birthday party. The event was an elaborate 3-course meal with a surprise visit from Lord Mazzing, played by a friend of Whitney’s. Fourteen girls participated along with grandparents, parents, and siblings as servants. All were attired in character with many in period correct 1800’s dress! A fabulous time was had by all. Thank you for such a great party idea.

“Our red hat group had such fun with this play. We particularly loved getting dressed up on the victorian era clothes. It was great fun.

Donna sent in this feedback (see photo no. 3 above):

“Hi Stephanie,

We played our first murder mystery, “The Love Letter” for our daughter’s 15th birthday party and had an amazing time! Everyone had great fun shopping at goodwill, etc for their costumes. Even our dog, Gizmo, wore a tuxedo. We followed your recommended menu, brought out the china and teapots and had a grand victorian time! Our son impressed the ladies as Lord Mazzing. Our daughter felt very special and she loved that her friends had such a unique experience! (We loved that it was clean fun too!) After dinner her friends stayed the night and watched Pride and Prejudice, Sense and Sensibility and other movies until 5:30am!

We were a little apprehensive about putting on a murder mystery party because we had never done one before. But it was so well written, organized and fun that our fears are gone! We just purchased another one for our oldest daughter’s 17th birthday party next month!

Thank you for creating this wonderful party tool!

Some of the characters from this girls mystery

The people present at the gathering are:

Lady Marion Mazzing

I am a dignified lady of very particular tastes. Since my poor dear husband died two years ago from a goose bone stuck in his throat, I have never been able to bring myself to serve goose at the table. I am a handsome woman who knows what it is like to be born into wealth and opulence. I have no close friends and nor do I want any. My son is my only real interest.

Lord Edward Mazzing

People say I am a very charming, handsome man, but I do have the reputation of trifling with women’s feelings. The fact is some women bore me so terrifically I have to move on to another one. I am very wealthy and somewhat arrogant. My mother loves me very much and is my greatest admirer.

Miss Prunella Braithwaite

I am a refined and gentle young lady of somewhat delicate disposition but when the weather is fine I love to sit outside and capture the beauty of flowers with my watercolors. I spend a lot of time doing good works for the poor and people say I am a very kind hearted person. My father has extensive business investments in Virginia.

Miss Bethany Chesterfield

I am fond of riding side-saddle and love the outdoors. My parents worry that I am somewhat more forthright than a lady should be and that I am apt to be quarrelsome in nature. My parents own a gunpowder factory. I like to ignore the constraints of civilized society.

Miss Wilma Winterflood

I excel at tapestry and singing and am a lady skilled in all the social graces. My parents are very well-respected and we are an influential family in the community. Although I appear to be gentle and quiet, my brothers say I am rather headstrong and stubborn. I often take the buggy for a ride by myself much to my parents’ dismay.

Miss Hyacinth Huntington

I am an only child and of a somewhat shy disposition. I am very skilled at lacework and I love Shakespeare, especially the tragedies. Sadly my father recently made some unfortunate investments and my family is facing economic ruin. I am terribly embarrassed by my situation as I am used to wealth and all the luxuries it affords.

Miss Charmaine Chamberlain

People say I am very gracious and I love to read poetry. My favorites are Samuel Taylor Coleridge and William Wordsworth. I am also a skilled pianist. My father owns numerous cotton plantations. I traveled abroad with my family when I was younger and I yearn to travel again especially to London. I miss the operas and plays dreadfully.

Miss Emily Stratford

People say I am rather intelligent. I must say, I do love puzzles and am very fond of writing. There are some false rumors going about that I have been secretly writing mystery novels under the nom de plume of James Ridley. I am very polite, but prefer to observe rather than talk. My father is a highly respected surgeon. My mother is afraid that my mental abilities will frighten men away so she tries to make me appear a silly little girl in public. She insists I wear pink and lots of frills and bows in my hair to make me look more feminine.

Miss Elizabeth Montgomery

I am just back from finishing school in Paris where I was greatly admired by all. I have a definite flair for fashion and am terribly fond of dancing. At the Paris Balls all the men wanted to dance with me. I also have a beautiful singing voice. At the moment, I am passionate about the color mauve and I wear it a lot. It’s so fashionable. My father runs a merchant shipping company, which is terribly boring.

Miss Clorinda Rosemonde

My father is a Duke and he loves me so much he had one of his gardeners plant a rose garden for me, which I treasure. My mother died when I was young and my brother is an army General. I am fond of entertaining and my father encourages me to hold tea parties. I play the flute admirably. Although I have no particular interest in getting married myself, I like to play matchmaker whenever I can.

Note: The role for Lord Mazzing is a brief optional role. He is only involved in Act One and the beginning of Act Two in the Standard and Play versions.
